2018 Great Year for Louisiana Cotton... So Far

According to LSU AgCenter Extension Service Cotton Specialist Dr. Dan Fromme at the Dean Lee Research Station, this has been a great year for planting cotton in Louisiana.  

And as of May first,  things were looking really good.

"We went from a cold spring it seemed like to summer all in a matter of a couple of days," said Fromme.

"Starting around May first until now we've had a significant amount of cotton that has been planted across the state.  What has been planted in the last two weeks is really looking good.  You couldn't ask for a better situation at this time," Fromme continued.

Some cotton was planted in April, but last month it was still on the cool side and wet, causing some of that cotton to be replanted. 

"With that said, we do have a significant amount of the cotton crop planted.  Very little remains to be planted at this time," said Fromme.  

"The reason it hasn't' been planted is because of dry soil conditions.  It's always  amazing how quick we can go from being too wet to too dry here in Louisiana."
