Lawmakers Scramble to Help Louisiana Soy Farmers, Avoid National Crisis Spurned by Trade War

In what otherwise might have been a boom year for Louisiana’s largest yield of soy beans, lawmakers are rushing to mitigate a triple threat that could devastate the industry. A combination of wet weather, later and larger harvests, and a 25 percent tariff imposed by China threatens the livelihoods of Louisiana farmers whose gross farm value totals roughly $800 million.
