Strain Back From Ag Commissioners Meeting in Ohio

Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Mike Strain is back home today after spending several days in Ohio at a meeting of Agriculture Commissioners in the north central US.  Strain serves this year as president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.

During his report on the Voice of Louisiana Agriculture Radio Network, Strain said he and his fellow commissioners talked a great deal about drainage run-off in that part of the US, planting cover crops, working to decrease sediment run-off into waterways with a goal of decreasing approximately 40% of the current run-off into the Great Lakes within the next five to six years.

“They’ve also done dramatic things in decreasing the run-off into the Great Lakes as well as the other rivers and streams that feed into the lakes. Really working hard on conservation,” said Strain.

The commissioner also pointed out the agriculture community in the north central US is doing everything they can to control sediment run-off to make the Great Lakes healthier and more environmental sustainability for the region.

Ohio currently has over a $100 billion dollar agriculture industry, according to Strain.
