New Experiments on Louisiana Wheat Diseases

By Don Molino, Voice of Louisiana Agriculture Radio Network

Dr. Boyd Padgett at the Dean Lee Research Station just south of Alexandria is working on a project this year for the Louisiana Soybean and Grain Research and Promotion Board to try and find solutions to some of the problems facing Louisiana wheat growers.

“In 2017, I’ll be evaluating disease resistance and looking at disease management practices in Louisiana wheat,” said Padgett.

That means Padgett will be going around the state looking at disease reactions several times during the year as well as at the official variety tests that are going to be conducted on the LSU AgCenter Experiment Stations.

“We’ll combine (those experiments) and use that for our disease recommendations the following year that we make for producers, says Padgett.”

“I’ll also be working with other LSU AgCenter scientists and county agents to conduct some off station variety demonstrations.  Also, with Dr. Trey Price and Dr. Steve Harrison we’ll be conducting some fungicide tests on experiment stations throughout the state,” Padgett concluded.
